Smart Lock Installation Checklist: Door Thickness, Backset and Handing

Most smart lock complaints are installation issues, not product faults. This checklist helps installers and distributors who support smart lock projects.

Free tool: enter your backset and centre distance in the Lock Body Finder to see which standard your door matches.

Printable: download the door fit-check sheet (PDF) and fill in the five measurements.

Before you order

  • Door thickness in millimetres, taken at the lock height.
  • Door material: wood, steel, aluminium or glass.
  • Existing lock body: photograph the faceplate and the body if it is accessible.
  • Backset and centre distance (for example 60 mm and 68 mm on a 6068 style body).
  • Handing: left-hand or right-hand opening, in or out.
  • Cylinder length: check that the cylinder suits the door thickness.

On site

  1. Open the box and check the kit: panels, lock body, strike plate, screws, cards, keys and cables.
  2. Fit the lock body with the latch the right way round.
  3. Fit the spindle and cylinder; turn them by hand before mounting panels.
  4. Route the cable between the panels without pinching it.
  5. Fit the outer and inner panels and tighten evenly.
  6. Insert batteries (AA on handle locks) or charge the rechargeable battery on dual-screen models.

Enrolment and tests

  • Add the administrator fingerprint or face first.
  • Test every unlock method, including the mechanical key.
  • Pair the app and check the language.
  • Test emergency power: USB on handle locks, Type-C on dual-screen locks.
  • Close the door and check the latch and auto-lock timing.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong handing selected, so the handle works in the opposite direction.
  • Cable pinched in the door, leading to intermittent faults.
  • Door thickness outside the supported range.
  • Skipping the strike plate alignment.

If you are unsure about fit, send us pictures first. Our lock body guide lists what we check.
