The most common reason a smart lock order goes wrong is a lock body that does not match the door. You can avoid it with a phone, a tape measure and ten minutes. This is the checklist we ask for when we confirm fit.
Six photos
- Door edge, open door. Open the door and photograph the whole faceplate (the metal plate on the edge) from top to bottom, with a tape measure or ruler beside it.
- Existing lock, outside. A straight-on photo of the handle and plate on the outer side.
- Existing lock, inside. The same on the inner side.
- Keyhole and cylinder. Close-up of the keyhole or cylinder and the escutcheon around it.
- Lock body, if removed. Both flat sides and the edge of the metal body, with a ruler in the frame.
- Whole door. A photo from a few steps back so we see the door material (wood, steel, aluminium frame or glass) and which side the hinges are on.
Five measurements
| Measurement | How to take it |
|---|---|
| Door thickness | Measure the edge of the open door in millimetres |
| Backset | From the door edge to the centre of the handle spindle hole |
| Centre distance | Between the centre of the spindle hole and the centre of the cylinder hole |
| Faceplate size | Width and length of the plate on the door edge |
| Handing | Standing outside, is the hinge on your left or right? |
Many bodies are named from two of these numbers, for example 6068 for a 60 mm backset and a 68 mm centre distance. Our size conversion table shows how the names relate, and door handing explains left and right.
What else helps
- Any marking or model number stamped on the body or faceplate.
- The country and the type of building (apartment, villa, office).
- How many doors of this type you plan to equip.
- The unlock methods you need: fingerprint, face, card, password or app.
Tools for this check
Enter the two main measurements in the Lock Body Finder to see which standard they match, or print the door fit-check sheet and fill it in at the door.
A message you can copy
Hello Mag, here are photos of my door and lock. Door thickness: __ mm. Backset: __ mm. Centre distance: __ mm. Handing: left / right. Country: __. Quantity: __.
Send it with the photos contact us on WhatsApp. We reply with the model and lock body that fit, and with the options for your market. If the door does not match our standard bodies, we say so before you order. For a deeper installation checklist see the installation checklist and our lock body compatibility guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to remove the old lock?
Not for a first check. Photos of the edge, both sides and the keyhole are usually enough. A photo of the removed body, if you can take it, makes the check faster.
What if I cannot measure the centre distance?
Send clear photos with a ruler next to the lock. We can often read the sizes from the photos.
Will you tell me if my door does not fit?
Yes. We confirm fit before the order and tell you if a standard body does not match.
