Smart Locks for Europe: Euro-Profile Cylinders, Mortise Bodies and Our Solutions

Europe is a patchwork of door types. Still, three building blocks appear in most markets: the euro-profile cylinder, the DIN-style mortise body and the multipoint lock. Knowing them helps you decide which smart locks are realistic.

The euro-profile cylinder

Euro-profile cylinders (DIN 18252 and EN 1303) are the key component in most European locks, and the key hole in the faceplate has the typical keyhole outline. Many smart locks replace only the cylinder and electronics, but the full lock body remains. The 68 mortise body in our photos has a euro-profile cylinder opening.

DIN-style mortise bodies

Interior and many apartment doors use mortise bodies defined by DIN 18251. A common designation is 55/72/8: a 55 mm backset, a 72 mm distance between the cylinder and the spindle, and an 8 mm spindle. Other backsets such as 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 mm exist. Smart handles that fit these bodies must use the same spindle and spacing.

Multipoint locks on entrance doors

Many European entrance doors, especially uPVC, aluminium and composite doors, use multipoint locks with bolts at several points. They are a different mechanism from single mortise bodies, and we do not list multipoint systems. For these projects, ask whether a smart cylinder or a different product suits the door.

What from our range fits

Door situationOptions in our rangeWhat to confirm
Single-bolt mortise entrance doorAutomatic locks on the 68 body (A60S, AC38S, B65S) with 6085, 6090 or 5072 rear-lock optionsBackset, centre distance, faceplate, door thickness

The 5072 rear-lock option has a 72 mm centre distance, the same spacing as the 55/72/8 standard, but a 50 mm backset instead of 55 mm. Always compare drawings; do not assume a match from the label.

It means a 55 mm backset, 72 mm cylinder-to-spindle distance and 8 mm spindle under DIN-style naming.

Do you offer smart locks for multipoint doors?

Multipoint systems are not listed in our range. Ask us for options for such doors.

Does the 5072 rear lock match the European 55/72 body?
